Rasmussen jumped.
“Look at me, man,” Colchester said in a lower voice. Rasmussen still looked wretched, but he seemed to be coming out of his stupor. “Talk to me,” the kid coaxed him. “You all right?”
Rasmussen stared at him. He blinked deeply, as if trying to clear his vision—but then he instinctively glanced over at the baby—
Don’t look back!
He forced his eyes away. He was shivering.
“Yo,” young Colchester began again, “you want me to call your wife or something?”
Rasmussen went back to staring ahead blankly. He shook his head.
“Talk to me, man,” Colchester coaxed him again. “What just happened? What’s up with you and the baby?”
At his mention of the baby, Rasmussen looked up at him sharply.
Colchester pressed him: “You afraid of your son or something?” A nervous smile came over the youngster’s face: the statement was supposed to be a joke, but it died in the silence. Rasmussen looked away and shook his head.
“Then what’s going on?”
Rasmussen seemed to be going back to his nonresponsive state—
“Yo!” Young Colchester screamed, so that Rasmussen jumped again. “Talk to me! Say something!”—Rasmussen shook his head—“What you afraid—”
The baby’s laughter reached a new pitch; rage suddenly filled Rasmussen, and he turned toward the baby—despite his fears. In that instant, he felt as though he could…
The baby looked back at him, amused—but the evil aura was gone; and when Rasmussen looked, the doll hung limply in the baby’s arms. Rasmussen stared, looking for something that would confirm his fears about the baby and the doll, but there was nothing. Young Colchester looked over at him:
“You want me to take you to the hospital, bruh?”
Rasmussen looked up at Colchester, as if only then noticing he was there. He stared at him for about five seconds. “Winthrop?” he whispered; he looked through the windscreen, as if he had woken up in a strange land.
“You all right, man?” the kid asked.
Rasmussen stared at him again; then, as something occurred to him, he frowned. “You can drive?”
“You see me driving, don’t you?” he said sarcastically.
“…But, how old are you?”
“Fifteen.”
“I thought you had to be sixteen to drive?”
“You gotta be sixteen to drive legally,” he said with a wry smile.
Rasmussen nodded, still fighting the effects of shock. He noticed he was not wearing a seatbelt; he put it on. …What the hell was happening to him? He took some deep breaths, trying to clear his mind. He asked himself if he had really seen what he thought he had seen….
They drove in silence for a minute or two, but Colchester seemed reassured that Rasmussen was going to be okay, so he did not press him on why he had almost killed them. As for Rasmussen, it was clear to him now that he was not well—and that he had not been well for a while now. His mind suddenly flashed with that scene from a few days ago: Colchester III running naked down the meandering road. Was the same thing happening to him? …And what was the story with those
